Support Public Radio

Posted 7 October 2010 by

It is public radio pledge time again. If you cannot think of a worthy receipient of your donations, I strongly suggest KPLU. For those of you who do not live near the waters of the Salish Sea and wonder why you should support this public radio station, here is one reason.

Go ahead. You know you want to donate.

That being said, one pledge drive I gave more than just money. I gave words to a song.

Mid-day jazz host Dick Stein had former KPLU announcer Paige Hansen in the studio during a pledge drive. Something they said inspired me to write the following words and send it to their on-air e-mail address. Not only that, they sang these words as a duet. On-air. Live. For everyone to enjoy.

Ev’ry pledge is sacred.
Ev’ry pledge is good.
Let’s keep public radio
in our neighborhood.

If the meter of those words seems familiar, it may be. Sing these words to the chorus of the following song.

Now, you have a second reason to support KPLU. Go ahead. You know you want to.

Disclaimer. Just because Paige Hansen and I have been on-air talent at the former KUMR, Rolla, Missouri, had nothing to do with it. She was there a full decade after I graduated. She was regular talent. I was a student assistant, known for staffing the big red switch during the Met Opera Season to handle going from the opera (variable times) to All Things Considered (fixed time), or sometimes doing the late evening summary of the news weekdays at 10:00 pm. But, both of us know Norm Movitz.
